Lucky Engineer

Presentation about (Post) graduate study in MAE Farewell Dinner has never failed to persuade me to take a master degree. The short forum in the event also stressed some good points of having a career as an engineer in Singapore. Adding my personal opinion, I shall share why engineering is having a good prospect in Singapore.

Firstly, it is pretty obvious that Singapore intend to develop its competency in engineering, from OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) to OED (Original Design Manufacturer). This means that Singapore will need more experts in engineering degree. Looking from nation perspective, Singapore, not like Hongkong, is not going to focus on finance field solely.

As an engineer, one will have an option to shift to other field. In fact I know a lot of people that shift from engineer to business or finance sector. On the other hand I have known none come into engineering field from other fields. It is very flexible! Many engineering opportunities are available with their specific tasks and roles.

Given the current economic situation, engineering career ensures good security. The shaking global economy, which is originated from the sub-prime dilemma, may result in recession in some country. This unstable business environment will directly impact the finance and business sector but is cushioned by the nature of engineering job. No company will shut down its million dollar plants if they are making loss but there are a number of finance industry employees or even CEOs retrenched due to the unfortunate event.

Lastly, it is a good start for an inexperienced graduate. It may not pay starting salary as high as the investment banking does. However the increment is probably better and the four tough year of your study will not be a waste.

Blessed Monday

Yesterday was a blessed day for me. It was started with the first group meeting which was intentionally arranged between me, another two master students and my professor. The other two master students could not come to the meeting. Hence I am the only person that met the professor, Prof. John Heng. I am so enthusiast to have this meeting to update him with my FYP progress. During the weekend I was able to identify unique EEG signal that corresponds to a certain task. It is great to tell him this good sign of development after seven month of no significant result.

To my surprise, I was not only able to elaborate my findings to him only but I also given a book as a present. Its title is Secrets of the Millionaire Mind. A subject that is currently I am interested in, to be a millionaire. In addition to this wonderful gift, he also shared his experience in this subject. He talked about vision and mission, correct mindset about being rich (right, happy and rich) and also his experience. Now I understand why my senior Andy Prima admires him so much. Hope to get to know more from him and of course to be a millionaire.

The book is not the only blessing that I got for the day. I was called for third round interview by Exxon (I consider this a blessing as well). Yeah after the embarrassing “congrats” case. Anyone reading this blog, please pray for me :-D hahaha...

Thanks God.

An Interview

Inspired by a weird humble friend of mine.

It was actually happened few weeks ago. I was called for a second round interview by one of the companies that I have applied for. As a mechanical engineering student, I was considered as one of the lucky few to be called for an assassination interview by the company. I arrived at the interview place earlier and was asked to wait at the lounge.

After sitting for 15 minutes, a pretty girl smiled at me and asked me to follow her to... yeah... It is to the interviewing room. With confidence, I opened the door and started this conversation:

WK: good... morning... (With a cute smile)
All interviewers: (with a friendly smile)... Good morning...

I closed the door, moving to the interview table and approaching one of the interviewers. FYI, there are three persons that interviewed me at that time. Let me refers them as OS, OJ and OB.

WK: (offering a firm handshake) Hi...
OB: My name is “Congrads” Congrats...
WK: (asking my self if it was a "congratulation") My name is William...

OB gave out an expression as if he was asking something that I haven’t replied to.

WK: Pardon me...
OB: Congrads... (this is what I heard, it supposed to be “My name is Congrad”)
WK: (with innocent face) Thank you...

What a stupid answer it was! I can still remember how surprised the other two interviewers were after hearing my lame reply.

Defining Memory

Finally it is Friday again. I had been struggling intensely in the previous two weeks. There were a lot of assignments and deadlines, recruitment fairs and of course the unforgettable FYP (Finding Your Partner Final Year Project). It was tiring indeed. However I would not write about the pathetic exhaustion of that busy period in this post.

Last weekend my old friend dropped by Singapore as a transit of his flight from Beijing to Indonesia. Hence I went to the airport to fetch him and bring him around Singapore. During dinner, we engaged in a conversation about our life. A life that I think has been moving very fast. From this conversation, I started to ask myself how vivid a memory that I had during my study in NTU. I am hardly able to express memorable moment during those three and a half years of study in Singapore. Am I not enjoying myself here, in Singapore?

A definite NO will be a correct answer to this. In fact there was a bunch of interesting experiences that I had as a university student in Nanyang Technological University. Those experiences were forgotten because I didn’t appreciate them. In fact, most of the experience, inclusive of studying, is a wonderful experience if we really value the action.

After those reflections, I started to wake up by saying to myself that all the list of things that I had to do that day was something fun. I started to talk to myself that I had to enjoy every single action in my day. As a result, I find my day brighter and happier. I could enjoy doing things more despite my busy schedule. FYI, the method of speaking to your own self is what I identify as “Power of Words”. I will write about this in other post. Watch it out!

Appreciating every action is a way to slow down time and value one’s life more. By defining any activities as something interesting will help us to gain greater joy in our life. However it is good to know the meaning of one’s life as well. Tell me what you think is the meaning of your life?
